What is Crohn’s Disease?

Crohn’s disease is a type of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) that causes inflammation of the lining of the gastrointestinal tract (GI). It most commonly affects the colon and the small intestine, but the exact area will vary among individuals. Symptoms typically start out mild and can worsen over time. It is even possible to experience symptoms outside of the gastrointestinal tract, like pain and swelling of the joints, sores and/or rashes of the skin, and redness and/or irritation of the eyes.

How is Crohn’s Disease Treated?

The goals of Crohn’s disease treatment are to:

  • Reduce inflammation in the gastrointestinal tract
  • Reduce the risk of flare-ups
  • Achieve long-term remission

Treatments for Crohn’s disease may include anti-inflammatory medications, immune system suppressor medications, antibiotics, nutritional supplements, nutrition therapy, surgery, or a combination of two or more of these therapies.

Why Is it Important to Adhere to Crohn’s Disease Treatment?

If not treated properly, or if left untreated, Crohn’s disease may lead to health complications, such as:

  • Intestinal blockage
  • Ulcers
  • Malnutrition
  • In some children, untreated Crohn’s disease can cause developmental delay
